Recently acquired by Re-Tech is the “exotic” Australian
Spotted Gumwood.
The Australian Waterfront, Walsh
Bay is currently undergoing
refurbishment. Some buildings are currently being dismantled, others restored
leaving the façade to capture Sydney’s
history, and bring it into the 21st century.
Australian Spotted Gumwood has been used throughout
Australia for nearly two centuries. These years reflect a cross section of
urban and maritime uses over the decades. The history of this wood and the cultural
significance as a “Precinct of the Rocks” which the illustrated “Register of
The National Estate” describes as arguably Australia’s most historic place.
Spotted Gumwood was mainly used in engineering construction i.e. shipbuilding,
ag machinery, flooring and plywood and main species for high impact forces like
axe handles. It is mainly located in New South Wales and Queensland. The source
of these beams is mostly warehouses and related industries from Walsh Bay,
which forms the northern boundary to Sydney on Sydney Harbor between Inlets of
Sydney Cove and Darling Harbor.
As recyclers, it is Re-Tech’s privilege to be able to attain
the Spotted Gumwood. Offering a unique exotic wood in reclaimed beams from the
most historical sites in Australia. A hardwood, pale to dark brown, with
frequent presence of wavy grain produces a beautiful fiddleback figure.
